Sean Michael Grimes was attacked by a group of men in Randall Drive, Litherland at about 4.55am on 28 December 2001. He was taken to hospital where he died on 7 January 2002.
He had been attacked close to some garages in Randall Drive and afterwards had been able to crawl to a nearby bus stop where he collapsed. he was found several hours later.
The police said that they were trying to trace two men that had been seen walking along Randall Drive between 12.45 and 1am on 28 December 2001 They said that one of the men had been wearing a baseball cap and had been seen trying to help a man, who was thought to have been Sean Grimes, to his feet. The witness who had seen the men said that he man in the baseball cap did not have much success in helping the man up and then went on his way. However, the police said that they had been unable to trace either of the men.
Sean Grimes was originally from London and had moved to Merseyside several months earlier.
